It's been an exceptionally cold winter in Winnsboro this year. I have been around the Columbia area on and off all of my life and I can't remember a winter that has been this cold. Maybe back in the seventies....... The oak trees have just recently dropped the rest of there leaves so it won't be long before we start to see some blooms popping out and bulbs coming up. Looking forward to that.

For all you folks out there that do your own gardening...  I'm guessing there will be many tender perennials that won't be coming back this spring.  Don't be surprised if your Lantana doesn't come back unless it's well established...... Might be a good time to cut back your liriope(monkey grass).  Makes for nice fresh new growth and removes any of the tattered foliage. Most landscapers and people I know do this chore with a string trimmer,  but if you don't do it at exactly the right time you may wind up with some shredded-looking foliage when the new growth comes out.... I do this either by hand or in larger patches use a lawn mower with a sharp blade on a high setting........... Winter is a good time to plant trees. Gives the tree a better start since it can root slowly as the temperature warms up.  It will be better adjusted to handle the heat of the summer. Don't forget to water it regularly in the growing season!....... Next month will be a good time to do any hard pruning before  new growth starts to emerge... Roses can be pruned back hard later in February.

Here is the flagstone retaining wall about 3/4 of the way done. It is dry stacked and fairly primitive. No mortar anywhere. I used heavy stone to keep it place.

Well we finally got back into work full swing since the ice and snow has melted away. I built a short stacked flagstone retaining wall this week. Next week will be renovating the front yard in the Shandon area .. Have a large landscape lighting job that will begin hopefully soon.. It's actually fairly busy for winter time. Won't be long now before the weather warms up... It's been a pretty harsh winter for South Carolina.
